Johnny: Played by CHRISTOPHER GILPATRICK – Johnny, Penny’s boyfriend, is taking a week off from his job to drive Penny on his motorcycle and help find her grandfather. Although he sports a Newport t-shirt, he is a loyal frequent Pall Mall smoker.
Jim: Played by GEOFF BURROWS – Jim, not knowing Penny or Johnny, is driving to Mississippi for spring break from college. Early in the story, he comes across Penny and Johnny in need of assistance when Johnny’s motorcycle has been spirited away.
Simon: Played by IGGY POP – Penny’s beloved grandfather, Simon, whom she has not seen since she was very young. Estranged from his family in Detroit, Simon is thought to have retired in Mississippi where he was originally from. Toiling at Detroit’s Fleetwood Plant for employment, Simon would moonlight as an R’n’B drummer, leaving little time for a family life. Aside from performing music, little else brought Simon pleasure…until he got to know his granddaughter. This not only surprised Simon, but also pleased him greatly.
Papa Ogou/Ogun: Personified by MICK COLLINS – Known as Ogou, Oggun, Ogum in the Americas, and as Ogun in West Africa, this spirit is revered as a tireless worker. With his machete and/or rifle, he can clear a path through all obstacles. His attributes are of war, revolution, iron forging, and of iron–period. If, and when, his testicles grow cold, his devotees had better come forth with some pig iron (strong drink)! Having no time, nor taste for love, only Erzulie can seduce him away from his, sometimes, devastating multitasking.
Narrator (aka Oscar Huckleby): Played by NATHANIEL MAYER – Nathaniel Mayer’s smooth, chimney-sweep voice lends an air of warmth and understanding to the story. “Wayne County Ramblin’, I like to call it, ‘Song O’ The North’.” Nathaniel seen here vacationing far away from the film in the Swiss Alps.
Erzulie/Oshun: Personified by LORETTE VELVETTE – Known as Erzulie, Ochun, Oxum in the Americas, and known as Oshun in West Africa, this spirit’s attributes are as goddess of love, lust and vanity. She resides in moving fresh waters, and at times, the limitations of love, and the brevity of life will make her cry. It is said, that she alone possesses the hidden charms capable of harnessing the tireless worker, Papa Ogou/Ogun.
Papa Legba/Eshu: Personified by OTHA TURNER – Known as Legba, La Bas, Ellegua, Exu in the Americas, and known as Eshu in West Africa, this spirit’s attribute is Lord of the Crossroads. Devotees will pray open the road for me, do not let any evil spirits bar my path.
Fish Fly: Played by CUB KODA – June Bug and Boll Weevil’s ever loving, if not anxious, friend and colleague. More responsible and concerned with their actions; the good cop, of the good cop/bad cop working team.
Boll Weevil & June Bug: Played by BILL PEITSCH & SANDRA ‘KRAMER’ SHAW – These two are helplessly in love with one another. They also enjoy thieving as both career and hobby. Together, with another, they acquire items that they sell to a most sophisticated middleman. They do all right for themselves.
August: Played by TAV FALCO – The most sophisticated middleman that provides the benefits and rewards for the earnest work ethics of Boll Weevil, June Bug & Fish Fly. Possessing not only equitable management abilities, August is also a renaissance employer; genuinely interested in sharpening artistic skills, that he believes, reside within us all.
Erie: Played by ERIE – Erie is Penny’s doll that was given to her when she was a young girl by Simon, her grandfather. Good Looking, svelte, armed, well dressed and accessorized, she has always possessed powers that Penny aspires to grow into. Even to this day, Erie is rarely far from Penny’s side.
“The Smallpox” Organist: Played by JEFF CONOLLY (of Lyres) – Penny dreams of a memory when her Grandfather, Simon, took her to a bar in what was left of Detroit’s Paradise Valley. They meet Simon’s organist there to set up equipment and sound check for that performance. To open up for Dr. Ross, is Simon’s band; The Smallpox.
Officers of the Law: Played by RON EASLEY & BEN HAMPER (aka Rivethead) – Seen here in glee at the notion they are being videographed for possible broadcast on a television series, it is hard to imagine that life’s travellers could be safe without their lying in wait, and dedication to ‘homeland security’. We can only imagine that if Penny, Johnny, or Jim enter into their jurisdiction, it can only contribute to their safety and well-being.
Officer Jackson: Played by CORDELL JACKSON – As the lone guard at a quiet, low attendance jail, Officer Jackson is known to shorten her shift while clicking on her guitar. While entertaining to some, other prisoners might rather endure an electric chair.
